Cross-Country Skiing
Many of the same trails that you hike in the summer in the Rocky Mountain National Park & Roosevelt National Forest make excellent winter cross-country ski (and snowshoe) trails.
For tips on the most popular destinations and trail conditions, give the Rocky Mountain National Park's office a call at: 970-586-1206

Downhill Skiing
Only 1 hour south of Estes Park on the scenic Peak to Peak National Scenic Byway, you'll find Eldora Ski Resort. Eldora is a full service resort complete with rentals and demos (including skis, snowboard equipment, helmets, and snow bikes). Also available are Telemark skis. Forget your ski clothing? You can rent that at Eldora also (adult sizes only). Lessons for all ages are available.
Snowboarding
Eldora (only 1 hour south of Estes Park) also has snowboarding facilities & equipment rentals. Their Super-Pipe averages 18 foot walls and a length of 600 feet. The Terrain park is full of features for both beginners and experts to build their skills. The Pipe & Park spills directly into Eldora's base area making it very accessible and user friendly.
You can also snowboard at Hidden Valley in the National Park. This once active ski resort has been returned to nature. However, the ski runs (while not groomed and without lifts) are still intact and can be used by snowboarders.

Extreme Skiing / Freeskiing
Looking for some back-country excitement? Try "extreme skiing" - performed on nature's ungroomed mountainsides. This sport can be dangerous though, and should not be attempted without guidance. Sundance Mountain is a popular location in the Rocky Mountain National Park for this activity.
A milder version, would be to ski "Hidden Valley" in the Rocky Mountain National Park. This once active ski-resort has been returned to nature, however the ski runs (while not groomed and without lifts) are still intact.
